Draft #2

Ruwe notitie: Ik ging in Spanje wonen zonder mijn werkgever in te lichten, dat vond het datacenter waar ik voor werkte niet leuk. Advocaat en exitregeling naar vrijheid en zon

draft Jochem-stijl — Archetype A

Hook-varianten

I moved to Spain without telling my employer. The datacenter I worked for was not amused.
Most compliance breaches happen on the vendor side. This one happened on mine.
I left for Spain without telling my employer. Lawyers, an exit deal, and a lesson I still use today.

Volledige post

I moved to Spain without telling my employer. The datacenter I worked for was not amused.

What followed:
→ Legal review of my employment contract and jurisdiction clauses
→ Negotiation of an exit arrangement instead of a disciplinary process
→ Three months between "we need to talk" and actual freedom
→ A lesson in how fast compliance risk becomes a people problem

But the number that really matters is one: one undisclosed location change, and suddenly I was the compliance liability I would later help clients avoid.

It's no longer asking "can we trust our people to follow policy". It's asking "do we actually know where our people and data are, and can we prove it".

The authority line I earned the hard way: I see this play out in reverse now. Companies discover mid-audit that a contractor worked from the wrong jurisdiction, or that data crossed a border no one authorized. The technical controls were fine. The human variable was not.

Compliance is a people problem wearing an infrastructure costume.

What's the compliance risk in your environment that no policy document actually covers?
And when did you last verify where your critical workloads - and the people who touch them - actually sit?

Gebruikte invalshoek: Topic bank angle 8 (a technical/legal change that flips the business case) crossed with personal narrative. The "undisclosed location" becomes the compliance breach that teaches the lesson Joey now applies in sovereign infrastructure: knowing and proving where people and data actually are, not just where policy says they should be.

A precise cross-section view through a layered industrial structure resembling a multi-floor datacenter or office building, sliced vertically to reveal internal spaces: each floor contains clean, rectilinear rooms with server racks, cable trays, and workstation furniture, but one floor in the middle section is rendered in a distinctly different material texture-warmer terracotta tile, softer plaster walls, wrought-iron window grilles-creating a visual discontinuity within an otherwise uniform concrete and steel stack, as if a fragment of a Mediterranean building has been inserted into the technical infrastructure without permission. The lighting is cool fluorescent white on the standard floors and warm amber sunlight filtering into the anomalous foreign layer, emphasizing the jurisdictional mismatch. The palette is dominated by slate grey, pale concrete, and galvanized steel with a single intrusion of ochre, rust, and sun-bleached stucco. The perspective is a straight-on architectural section view, clinical and diagrammatic, with exposed structural columns, conduit runs, and ventilation ducts visible in the cut, rendered in a clean isometric editorial illustration style that suggests both precision and the unsettling presence of an unplanned human variable hidden within a controlled system.
